From dry air to temperature shifts, winter places repeated stress on skin. Learn what’s really happening — and how understanding helps you care for it better.
Winter is a slow accumulation of everyday stress: cold winds on the way to work, overheated rooms that dry the air, hot showers that feel comforting but quietly take more than they give back. On their own, none of these are extreme — together, they strain how skin holds on to water and lipids.
“Winter is known to bring a whole series of challenges for the skin, starting with the most obvious one: the weather outside. As temperatures drop and humidity levels fall, the skin naturally loses more water from its surface,” explains Claudia Mattia, Scientific Communications Lead at Noli.
By February, that strain is familiar. Energy is low, the days are short, and Valentine’s season adds its usual pressure. This month, self-love isn’t about fixing everything. It’s about choosing comfort, consistency, and care that helps skin cope with winter — not compete with it.
When Cold Winds and Sudden Temperature Shifts Increase Skin Sensitivity
Cold outdoor air contains very little moisture, which increases transepidermal water loss at the skin’s surface. Step back into heated indoor spaces, where dry air accelerates evaporation even more.
Why is it challenging for the skin? This constant back-and-forth between dry environments makes it harder for skin to retain hydration. Over time, factors such as cold wind exposure and long, hot showers increase water loss and thin surface lipids.
“This is why, during winter, more people report having sensitive or reactive skin compared to other seasons,” notes Claudia Mattia.
Supporting skin here means prioritising comfort and consistency, rather than pushing it to adapt again and again.

How Indoor Heating Dehydrates Skin
Central heating creates a dry environment that pulls moisture from the skin for hours at a time. Unlike cold air outdoors, this dehydration is subtle but continuous.
“But the cold outdoors is only part of the story. Once inside, central heating creates a very dry environment as well. Even when we are protected from the cold, indoor air continues to strip moisture from the skin.” notes Claudia Mattia.
Why this matters: Why this matters: As hydration levels drop, skin is more prone to discomfort and imbalance. Repeated depletion weakens the skin’s ability to recover, leaving it feeling less resilient, more reactive, and slower to regain balance — especially toward the end of winter.
Winter care here is about reducing daily depletion and helping skin conserve what it already has.
Winter Skin Fatigue: When Months of Stress Start to Show
Winter skin fatigue isn’t caused by one single misstep. It builds through repetition: dry air, hot showers, constant temperature changes. Add stress and lack of sleep, and the skin’s natural renewal process begins to slow, gradually dulling its natural radiance.
“What makes winter particularly challenging for the skin is that these factors do not act in isolation. Cold air, low humidity, indoor heating, hot showers, and reduced sunlight all add up.” explains Claudia Mattia.
What fatigue looks like on skin: Reduced luminosity, increased sensitivity, slower recovery, and sometimes redness or uneven tone. It can appear at any age, affecting both younger and more mature skin.
This is also why winter is not the moment to keep switching products. Every new formula asks skin to adapt again, when it already has less energy to spare.
What helps skin cope: Stability matters more. Supporting hydration, maintaining barrier comfort, and exfoliating gently once a week can help remove dead skin cells without disrupting skin balance.
In February, self-love can mean sticking with what works — and letting consistency do the heavy lifting.

What Low Light and Vitamin D Changes Mean for Skin
Often called the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D plays a quiet but essential role in overall health and in how skin functions day to day. In winter, reduced exposure to natural light often means lower vitamin D synthesis, with effects that are subtle at first but meaningful over time.
Why it counts for skin: Vitamin D supports cell renewal and helps skin maintain its protective function. When levels are low, skin turnover can slow, leaving skin looking duller, feeling more reactive, and less resilient to external stressors. These changes may not be immediately visible, but they influence how skin behaves beneath the surface.
Sunlight remains the most effective way to support vitamin D levels — but exposure should never come at the expense of skin protection. Daily SPF remains essential year-round to support skin health without compromising long-term balance.
